If these makeup, hair-care, and skin-care brands haven't been on your radar they will be after today.
While supporting the culture has always been top of mind for us, we can't assume that its that way for everyone. Black women have led beauty trends since the beginning of time. From hair trends like braids, afros, slick baby hair, and 30 inch weaves to the different makeup looks that we've grown up to see in music videos. One thing is for sure we've never been apologetic about our boldness and diversity. Although we've seen our moms and aunties rock these trends for decades we haven't always gotten awareness for them in the media. Mary and I have worked in the beauty industry for a collective of over 25 years and we've seen the lack of diversity from brands assortment and marketing. So to honor the culture and the amazing brands that have been developed out of this culture we wanted to share with you our favorite Black-Owned Beauty Brands.
Let's start with HAIR...
Up first, PATTERN BEAUTY
Actress and hair icon, Tracee Ellis Ross launched her own hair brand called Pattern Beauty in 2019. The hair care line was created out of the love for curls and all of their pattern. From 3b to 4c textures, you name it, there is a product for you. Most "curly hair" products leave your hair feeling weighed down by oils and extensive moisture, not to mention crunchy. While Pattern Beauty's mission is to encourage healthy, juicy, and bouncy hair. These products are sold at Ulta
"OUR PATTERNS ARE EXPANSIVE. OUR PATTERNS ARE UNIQUE. OUR PATTERNS ARE BEAUTIFUL."
Although many had no idea that Briogeo is Black-Owned, the founder and CEO of the brand Nancy Twine has worked diligently to create a brand that is clean, conscious, and diverse. My favorite products are from the Scalp Revival Collection. If you tend to have a dry, itchy, or flaky scalp this line will help to give your scalp a deep clean by detoxifying and exfoliating your scalp without irritation. These products are sold at Sephora.
Mielle Organics launched in 2014 with the creation of the first Mielle Organics product, the Advanced Hair Formula, a unique proprietary blend of herbs, amino acids and minerals to support healthy hair, skin and nails, and immune system. After popular demand, Mielle Organics began producing products customers demanded with the introduction of the the Mint Almond Oil, acclaimed for its scalp sensation and root stimulation that aid in hair growth and provide illustrious shine.- Mielleorganics.com

Becoming a young mom at the age of 16 didn't stop this beauty mogul. Beauty Bakerie founder, Cashmere Nicole knew that she wanted to create a better life for her and her daughter. So she did just that. Beauty Bakerie is all about being " BETTER NOT BITTER" with all of her bakerie theme goodies, her products leave you looking flawless. I love the coverage that her foundation gives and her highlighters...ON ANOTHER LEVEL!! Products are available at Ulta.
You may have seen founder Melissa Butler on Shark Tank getting rejected by judges but she didn't let her dreams stop there. Melissa went on to create The Lip Bar. Her products are filled with good for you ingredients and are 100% vegan. The brand carries everything from bold and edgy lipsticks, foundations, blush, and more. Her brand is now available at Target.
This brand launch created MAYHEM in Sephora. The biggest launch yet!! We all obviously know the creator behind this amazing brand. Ms. Rihanna Fenty herself and I'm happy to say that she didn't disappoint. Her products are great quality, long-lasting, super pigmented, and super diverse in shades. Her fingerprint is all throughout the brand and you can tell by the names of the products. Although I am ready for her to drop an album lol, I cannot deny that I am obsessed with what she's doing over at FENTY BEAUTY. Available at Sephora

While pregnant founder Desiree Verdejo worked at a popular boutique surrounded by premium skincare she couldn't find anything that was catered to her needs. She struggled with hyperpigmentation and breakouts and was ready for a change so she set out to create that change. Today, Hyper Skin is best known for its Hyper Clear vitamin C serum that not only brightens the skin but helps with texture. If your looking for great ingredients and a product that works, this line is for you. Available at gethyperskin.com
