Remember last year when everyone was Marie Kondo-ing their life?!? Going through all of their things to see what sparked joy. I remember doing this too, but unfortunately, I never quite made it to my closet. I mean, let's be real, cleaning out your closet and having to make decisions on what stays and what goes, is probably worse than going to the OBGYN. Not just because it's boring, but mostly because it means facing head on every bad fashion choice you've ever made. I think as women we have the innate ability to buy massive amounts of clothes that we don't actually have any intention of wearing. We do it as a nod to the rest of the world, saying hey I'm on trend too, even if we don't actually like it. When you sit back and think about it, it's exactly how you end up with so many pieces in your closet that never make it beyond the rack. Plus, buying all those things is a massive waste of money!
However, there is hope for you. I'll let you in on a little secret. Its called a Capsule Wardrobe. Haven't heard of it? Well just know this is gonna save you some serious money and you will never have to worry about that dreaded closet cleanout again!
The idea of a capsule wardrobe was popularized by Donna Karan in 1985 when she released a capsule collection of seven interchangeable work-wear pieces. Each piece was designed to create multiple outfit options that would carry you season after season, year after year. For me, the greatest thing about a capsule wardrobe is that you invest in a few timeless, quality pieces that you will have forever and never need to rebuy. Sounds great, right?!
So, I am going to share with you 10 essential pieces you need to start your capsule wardrobe! There are, however, two things you need to keep in mind before you start building your own. First, consider your body shape. Choose cuts that are flattering to your body and not necessarily on-trend. Just because skinny jeans are in style, doesn't mean you should invest in those if they don't make you look or feel like a billion bucks. You will end up not wearing them. Second, don't skimp on quality. Choose pieces that are going to hold up to multiple wears and washes. These are investment quality pieces and you will want them to last you for years to come. So, if the shirt is $100 but it feels amazing and substantial, buy the $100 shirt.
Now let's get started. Your 10 Essential Pieces

So, I bet you are wondering how many outfits you can create with just these pieces. You actually have more options than you think! Let's take the black leather leggings for a ride. For a casual Saturday, throw on those leggings with the white tee, and denim jacket. For work, pair the leggings with the oversized white button-down, and your black blazer. Concert? No problem! Leather leggings, with your black tank top and your leather jacket! Extremely easy, right!?!
The most important thing to consider after you've cemented your capsule wardrobe is to know its okay to purchase new items! Yes, I said its okay to buy new pieces. However, they should be pieces that compliment the items already in your capsule wardrobe, not items that replace them. So you can refresh that black blazer you've had for a few seasons by adding a belt to go around it to give it new life. You can also take that new belt you just purchased and use it around your oversized white button-down and your black jumpsuit. That new belt has just added more value to the pieces in your capsule wardrobe and has made some of your seasoned items feel brand new again! So take comfort in knowing that you are encouraged to add special seasonal accessories that add value and give you additional options for wear. I'll leave you with this. A capsule wardrobe, while the items are your basics, should never feel boring or dated. Choose pieces from the above categories, that make you feel like a billion bucks. Those are investments in your closet as well as your self-confidence. Until Next Time...
